Onboarding: shorten the path to the first value delivery
The first experience should help the person complete a meaningful task, without steps that do not explain its purpose.

After starting to use a service or product, someone may encounter screens, forms, or instructions that seem simple to staff but don't make sense to those arriving. The delay before realizing a concrete benefit is an important learning point.
Set the first useful result
Ask customers what they consider a first win: completing a task, understanding a report, or solving a need. Be specific and avoid calling registration or login a value if it doesn't help the person move forward.
Watch a person complete the route
Have a new user perform the task without receiving instructions that would not normally be available. Note pauses, doubts, repeated attempts and confusing terms. Then ask what you expected to find at each moment.
Remove friction without hiding choices
Eliminate redundant steps, explain why information is needed, and allow the person to resume the task when appropriate. Do not reduce effort by omitting important costs, consequences, conditions, or controls.
Measure completion and time along with errors, help requests, and dropouts. A quick route is no better if it leads to a poorly understood choice. Review again after changes and with people of different familiarity levels.
Frequently asked questions
How long should onboarding last?
Enough for the person to safely achieve the first result. The time varies depending on the task and the risk involved.
Should I automate all instructions?
Automate predictable guidance, but offer paths of help and human review when there are exceptions or important consequences.
How do I know it’s improved?
Note the completed task, difficulties and understanding of conditions. Compare similar people and contexts when evaluating a change.
