Separate attention metrics from outcome metrics

Visualizations help you understand reach; alone, they do not show whether communication helped someone move forward.

Separate attention metrics from outcome metrics

A metric is only useful when it answers a management question. Likes, impressions and visits may reveal that a piece caught attention, but the objective may be to clarify a choice, receive complete orders or reduce recurring doubts.

Draw a short chain

Write: activity → audience response → expected result. For example: publishing an explanation → readers use the list to prepare a conversation → arrive with more complete information. Each link needs an observable signal; do not treat correlation as proof of causation.

Combine signals from different steps

Choose a reach metric, a meaningful behavior metric, and an effort or quality metric. Define period, audience and origin of data. Record the starting value, measurement limits, and external factors such as seasonality or change in distribution.

Use the numbers to formulate the next question

If reach grows without useful actions, investigate audience fit or clarity. If there are actions but the result does not advance, look for further friction. Compare groups and periods carefully and complement numbers with examples and conversations.

Avoid collecting unnecessary personal data. Metrics must support proportional decisions and respect the rules applicable to the context in which the business operates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important metric?

It depends on the decision you need to make. Choose one linked to the outcome and keep context signals to understand changes.

Do many views mean success?

They mean achievement, not necessarily understanding or results. Check what the audience did next and whether it matches the objective.

Can I compare different campaigns?

It can, if the audience, period, definition of metrics and conditions are sufficiently similar. Explain the differences when they are not.
